Jewelry Care Tips

It is important to take care of your jewelry.

Here are some tips to help keep it feeling and looking fresh:

  • Try to remember to remove your jewelry before doing tasks that use your hands or have a lot of movement involved, especially rings that have set stones. It is especially important to protect the stones - some types of stones are softer than others, and therefore can get banged up if you aren’t careful and can also absorb oils etc. which can lead to the colour changing over time. Gardening can really scratch up jewelry, so if you are planning to get your hands dirty try to remember to take your rings off if you are concerned.

  • I use sterling silver to make most of my creations, and it will tarnish over time. I do not coat my jewelry in any anti-tarnishing products, therefore they may tarnish faster then some of your other sterling silver jewelry. If you know you aren’t going to wear your jewelry for a while, but want to try to slow it down from tarnishing, try storing it in an air tight container (like a jewelry box or zip lock bag). Some day to day activities and products can speed up tarnishing, like showering and sweating etc, and using things like hair spray, perfume & lotion etc. If you are concerned, perhaps consider removing your jewelry before using certain products or doing certain activities.

  • If your jewelry gets tarnished, look for a good quality polishing cloth in your local shop or online. Or, if your jewelry doesn’t have stones involved, try mixing a little baking soda with water to form a paste and use a soft cloth to rub this mixture onto your silver. If there are hard to reach areas, try using an old tooth brush. If the tarnish is really stuck on there, try letting the paste sit on the silver for a little bit before continuing to rub.
